This list of Prisoner of War Camps, Italian Service Unit Camps, and Prisoner of War Hospitals is based on weekly reports located on NARA microfilm #66-538 (population lists June 1942-June 1946). Additional locations based on newspapers, interviews, and other NARA records (at College Park and Regional Archives).
The POW Camps in Alaska during World War II included:
Excursion Inlet, Haines Borough, AK (base camp, earlier a branch camp under Lawton, WA) contained Italian POWs
Enemy alien internment camp:
Richardson (Fort), Anchorage city-borough, AK (Japanese)
Cemeteries:
Ft. Richardson, Anchorage city-borough, AK (235 Japanese cremations, some enemy combatants), Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (formerly Elmendorf AFB) now occupies the original (1940) site while Ft. Richardson moved to its current site, 8 km north of Anchorage in 1950, now Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
There was 1 base camp, 1 internment location and 1 cemetery in AK.
