This list of Prisoner of War Camps, Italian Service Unit Camps, and Prisoner of War Hospitals is based on weekly reports located on NARA microfilm #66-538 (population lists June 1942-June 1946). Additional locations based on newspapers, interviews, and other NARA records (at College Park and Regional Archives). Many thanks to Lisa Foster and Christy Calhoun of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum for their assistance in locating photos from Camp shelby.
The POW Camps in Mississippi during World War II included:
•Clinton (Camp), Clinton, Hinds County, MS (base camp)
•Como (Camp), Como, Panola County, MS (base camp)
•McCain (Camp Henry P.), Elliott, Grenada and Montgomery Counties, MS (base camp)
•Shelby (Camp), Hattiesburg, Forrest and Lamar Counties, MS (base camp)
•Van Dorn (Camp), Centreville, Amite and Wilkinson Counties, MS (base camp)
Cemeteries:
•Camp Como, MS (transferred to Fort McClellan, AL)
•Camp Shelby, MS (transferred to Fort Benning, GA)
