These are photos from Camp Monticello in Monticello, AR. Photos and descriptions are courtesy of Michael Pomeroy.

The first photo is of the entrance to the hospital campground. Behind Pomeroy was a POW compound and the street at his feet passing left to right through the photo was the one that passed between the hospital compound and POW compounds. The camera is pointed directly down at the "L" shaped street in the hospital compound looking towards the steam plant. The second photo is of the smokestack that towered above steam plant. Pomeroy and his father estimated it to be approximately 100 feet tall since the tallest trees near it are between 80 to 100 feet in height. The size makes sense since the designers would want to make cetain that any embers escaping out the top of the smokestack would have a chance to cool down befor they reached the ground. The steam plant was surrounded by wooden buildings with tar paper roofs and could have caught fire quite easily if burning embers had landed on them. Third and fourth photos are of the boilers that were left in an open basement at the foot of the smokestack.

This photo is the fairgrounds at the camp.

This photo was taken at the location of the guard house at the main gate.

Photo was taken at the first street intersection after passing through the main gate. Taking this shot Pomeroy is looking down Main street toward the Chapel and the prisoners compound. To the left was once the headquarters, and past that on the left was the "bunker", and past that on the left was what Pomeroy called the "unidentified ruin". Behind him to the right stood the Camp Commanders house.

This photo was taken at the Gate on Main Street when the camp was active. Photo taken during the war by Roland Wacker, now at Drew County Museum.

This photo of the train siding (Killin) closest to the camp where the prisoners and supplies where loaded and unloaded.

This photo is of the Officer's Club.

This photo is of the Chapel at Monticello that was taken by E.R. Pomeroy during the 1970s. The Chapel was build by the POWs themselves, but sadly was not preserved and little of it still remains. The photos of the Madonna in the second picture were taken by E.R. Pomeroy during the war. The Madonna was housed in the chapel, but is no longer there.

Photo is the fences at the camp at night. Photo in the collection of Roland Wacker, now at Drew County Museum.
